Wally Carr and Gaele Sobott at the Block in Redfern

CHAMPION Indigenous boxer Wally 'Wait-a-While' Carr will be in conversation with his biographer, Lakemba author Gaele Sobott, as part of the Studio Stories series at The Parramatta Artist Studios on Thursday, July 16.

An Australian and Commonwealth champion boxer, Mr Carr has held more than 12 titles, fighting from featherweight to heavyweight.
One of the last men to fight the 15-rounder, he had 101 professional bouts in a 15-year boxing career. Growing up in western NSW, he moved to Sydney at the age of 16 and his story offers an Aboriginal man's perspective on rural NSW and inner-city Sydney life.

It is also about his courage in overcoming addiction and his determination to survive and live with dignity after retiring from boxing in 1986.
Ms Sobott taught English at the University of Botswana before moving to Lakemba, and has also lived in France and England. The pair worked together for several years, travelling all over Australia to gather the fragments of Mr Carr's life in order to put them together again for his biography, My Longest Round.

Studio Stories is a free monthly themed workshop aimed at writers in Western Sydney. The sessions include a short reading by the featured writers, discussions and an open microphone plus drinks and nibbles.
This month's themed session, 'Taking Another Life Into Your Hands', will be held from 6.30pm at the Artist Studios located at Level 2, 68 Macquarie Street in Parramatta.

The event is free and no bookings are necessary. Details:

Wally Carr Fighting to raise funds for FSHD

Please support the muscular dystrophy fund drive - My best friend has FSHD muscular dystrophy. I get real sad when I see she is losing her mobility and that she gets tired very quickly. Her muscles are wasting away. Thousands of families in Australia are suffering because of this illness. I'm asking you to please donate money to help find a cure. Every dollar counts. I want to hit FSHD with a mighty left hook and knock it out for good!
